Icon Las Olas construction set to begin
After 15 years of legal challenges, hard feelings and a housing crash, the 45 story Icon Las Olas is finally happening. The Related Group of Florida said it will start construction in December or January on the 272 unit complex at 500 E. Las Olas Blvd., the site of the former Hyde Park Market. The tower should be ready by late 2016 or early 2017. The project along the north bank of the New River originally was expected to be a condominium, and it still maybe. But for now Related plans high end rental apartments and will let the market dictate whether they should be converted to condos, said Patrick Campbell, a vice president of Related. ”Anytime we break ground we’re excited, and even more so when we’ve had such a storied past,” Campbell said. Related first submitted plans to the city of Fort Lauderdale in 1999, but supporters of the Stranahan House next door objected to the development because they feared it would overshadow the city’s oldest building.
