Tortuga Music Festival 2014

Rock the Ocean’s Tortuga Music Festival returns to Fort Lauderdale Beach with big names and a timely message.

It was a love of the sea  as well as of music  that inspired music executive Chris Stacey to start Rock the Ocean’s Tortuga Music Festival last year.

“Chris started Rock the Ocean because he is really impassioned by oceans and ocean-related causes,” said promoter and partner JH Niland.

“Since we’re both music lovers as well, it seemed natural to us to come up with a new way to present a cause-driven music festival. Our goal for Tortuga was to raise awareness about issues threatening the oceans while putting on two days of top-level entertainment.”

This year’s list of artists is impressive: Reggae master Ziggy Marley, Americana queen Sheryl Crow, pop-rock outfit Train, Southern rockers .38 Special and West Coast psychedelic reggae groove band Slightly Stoopid headline the show.

Niland and Stacey had a specific musical agenda in mind when they planned this year’s roster.

“A lot of different acts will be on display at the festival,” Niland said. “But we’ve made a conscious effort to lean towards country artists because that kind of festival hasn’t been tried in South Florida yet.”

So also appearing will be Luke Bryan, Eric Church, Dierks Bentley and Hank Williams Jr.

Niland believes that, as time goes by, the Tortuga Music Festival will continue to grow in stature on both a musical and environmental level.
