Southwest Ranches is located on the eastern edge of the Florida Everglades, 15 miles southwest of Fort Lauderdale. It was incorporated in 2000 to preserve its semi-rural lifestyle. The name was chosen partially because of its location in relation to Fort Lauderdale and partially because of its many horse ranches. It is approximately 13 square miles and is home to about 7,300 residents according to the 2010 census. The town has a rural environment filled with grazing animals, nurseries, farms, ranches and a lot of wildlife.They have a "Preserve Our Rural Lifestyle" state of mind and preseve that with zoning restrictions.
